AmeriCorps has a program (National Civilian Community Corps) that sends teams of 8-12 young adults to work on a short term, intensive project for localities, non-profits, or schools. Short term typically means 6-8 weeks.
Projects are intended to help communities with critical needs related to infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, energy conservation, natural or other disasters, and urban and rural development.
There is a two step process to apply for a team: First submit a concept form and then a full application. The next concept form deadline is April 15.

NEW Sustainable Communities Planning Grant Program

HUD is looking for public comments from stakeholders about how to
structure a NEW Sustainable Communities Planning Grant Program. In
coordination with DOT and EPA, HUD will be making $100,000,000
available through this program, with 3 funding categories currently
proposed:
1) Funding to support the preparation of regional plans for sustainable development.
2) Funding to support the preparation of more detailed execution plans
and programs to implement existing regional sustainable development
plans.
3) Implementation funding to support regions that have regional
sustainable development plans and implementation strategies in place
and need support for a catalytic project or program.
The partnership between HUD, DOT and EPA and this new program are based on 6 Livability Principles:
1) Provide more transportation choices.
2) Promote equitable, affordable housing.
3) Enhance economic competitiveness.
4) Support existing communities.
5) Coordinate policies and leverage investment.
6) Value communities and neighborhoods.
Preservationists should think about how their communities/regions might
plug into this new source of funding and advance sustainability goals.
Grants under this program will be capped at up to $2,000,000 for small
metro or rural areas, and up to $5,000,000 for large metropolitan areas.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
1) Participate in the listening tour around the country (see schedule)
or webcast session (on March 9 or 11, no registration required) to hear
more about the new program. See http://www.hud.gov/webcasts/index.cfm
2)
