Since 1985, the Virginia Main Street (VMS) program has been helping localities revitalize the economic vitality of downtown commercial districts using the National Main Street Center’s successful Main Street Approach™. Main Street is a comprehensive, incremental approach to revitalization built around a community’s unique heritage and attributes. Using local resources and initiatives, Main Street helps communities develop their own strategies to stimulate long term economic growth and pride in the traditional community center -- downtown.

Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development
The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is committed to creating safe, affordable, and prosperous communities to live, work and do business in Virginia. DHCD partners with Virginia’s communities to develop their economic potential, regulates Virginia’s building and fire codes, provides training and certification for building officials, and invests more than $100 million each year into housing and community development projects throughout the state - the majority of which are designed to help low-to-moderate income citizens. By partnering with local governments, nonprofit groups, state and federal agencies, and others, DHCD is working to improve the quality of life for Virginians.

Virginia Housing Development Authority
The Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) is the state’s mortgage finance agency. Created in 1972 by the Virginia General Assembly, our mission is to help Virginians attain quality, affordable housing. Our vision is to mobilize partners to meet Virginian’s housing needs.
VHDA helps Virginians with low- to moderate-incomes buy their own homes. We also help finance affordable, quality rental housing and we help people with disabilities and the elderly make their homes more livable. We teach free homeownership education classes, and partner with other lenders, developers and community service organizations to help put quality housing within the reach of every Virginian. And, we do it all without using a single taxpayer dollar. Since our founding, VHDA has committed financing for 131,000 single family homes and 96,000 multifamily apartments.
